In 1986 African-American musician Dee Dee Bridgewater left the United States and moved to Paris, France where she lived for the next fifteen years with her family, two daughters and a son (born in 1992). The musician’s successful career as a jazz singer in Europe began upon her arrival in the City of Light with the album Live in Paris (1987), recorded on 24–25 November 1986 at the New Morning a well-known jazz club in Paris. On the occasion of the album release in 1987, French photographer Jean-Michel (JM) Voge photographed for an American magazine the jazz great with her younger daughter China Moses in their apartment in Montmartre. JM chose what seemed an obvious prop, a piano taking center stage, for an intimate and joyful environmental family portrait of a mother, a world-class performer and diva at the top of her career and future soul singer daughter China Moses very much at home in France of the late 1980s.

Dee Dee Bridgewater and Daughter China Moses, Paris 1987 by Jean-Michel Voge is an archival pigment print on baryta paper 24" x 17" edition 1/5 -- the photograph is signed, titled, and dated on verso (photo back). Printed by the artist.
