Lace curtains, Morocco, 1980 by Jean-Michel (JM) Voge, is a contemporary color photograph, an archival pigment print on handmade Awagami Japanese paper. Printed by the artist this is a 23.5" x 16.5" signed, titled, dated (verso) edition 1/5.
The figure’s traditional bold-orange costume against his dark skin remains in sharp contrast with the alabaster lace curtains in the background. Looking directly into the camera with innocence, serenity and no fear of revealing himself, the subject’s face and smile resemble a buddha. The environmental portrait captures, however, the spirit and history of Marrakech. A study in contrasts, colors, and cultures, the man in a white turban and collar sits peacefully against a backdrop of tiles and lace.
