Beach II, Italy, 1984 by Leonard Freed is an 11" x 14" black and white photograph, a gelatin silver RC press print from the Freed archive, signed verso (on back of photograph) by the photographer, stamped/authenticated vintage print by the Freed Estate.

Leonard Freed discovered Little Italy in New York City early in his career and equally became charmed by Italians in their own country. The photographer made numerous trips to Italy, especially to Rome and Naples, capturing the people. everyday life, love, sadness, joy of family gatherings, food and leisure. Freed's photographs of Italy ultimately reflect the “Italian spirit,” the art of enjoying the moment, the culture and lifestyle of a Latin country.

Artist's Bio:

Freed's photographic career often led him to tackle weighty documentary subjects, such as work he shot for his famous series "Black in White America" for which he became well known as a documentarian or social documentary photographer.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards. As a Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement made him well-known as did his photo essays on New York, Italy, Germany, among others. Leonard Freed died in 2006.
